The video from our February 16th virtual Friday Forum on Supported Decision-Making & Dignity of Risk is now available.

Supported Decision-Making (SDM) is an alternative to guardianship for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities who need some assistance in making decisions. It allows the individual to make choices about their own life with help from a chosen team of friends, family members, or professionals who serve as supporters. Dignity of RiskĀ is a concept that dovetails perfectly with SDM as it encourages caregivers to respect the right of an individual to take reasonable risks, and perhaps make mistakes, on their path to self-determination and self-esteem.

Many, many thanks to our featured speakers, Teresa Parks, Deputy Director of the Illinois Guardianship & Advocacy Commission (IGAC), Parent Advocate Diane Compton, and Self-Advocate Erin Compton.

Educational Outreach events are designed to provide families, educators, and service providers with useful information related to the transition process as well as life in the community after educational entitlements end. Events are paid for in part by agency funding from Palatine Township. Thank you for your support!
