Our February Informational Tour found us traveling to Harper College in Palatine to visit their Career Skills Institute.

Part of Harper’s Continuing Education Program, the Career Skills Institute provides students with mild intellectual disabilities a college campus experience that seeks to assess and strengthen basic academic and vocational skills. Each year’s cohort features 12-15 students that meet three days per week from 9:00-1:45.

Within the two-year program, students develop their self-advocacy and general entry-level employment skills while creating a realistic career plan. Year one includes six modules focusing on basic academics and communication. Year two includes six modules focusing on career exploration with a guided on-campus internship experience.

Many thanks to Eric Weibe, Program Coordinator, for arranging our tour, and to former student George for helping facilitate. More information about the Career Skills Institute, including a program application, can be found here: Harper College – Career Skills Institute

Educational Outreach events are designed to provide families, educators, and service providers with useful information related to the transition process as well as life in the community after educational entitlements end. Events are paid for in part by agency funding from Palatine Township. Thank you for your support!
